Tumutumu Celebrates Graduation

After nearly a decade of partnership, prayer, and steady investment, the Tumutumu community in Kenya has reached a powerful milestone. They have officially graduated from their partnership with 410 Bridge.

Graduation is more than an event.

It is a moment that marks readiness, resilience, and local leadership stepping fully into the future. For Tumutumu, it represents years of growth that donors like you helped make possible.

A Community Rooted in the Land

Named after the well-known Tumutumu hill, this community has a rich agricultural history. Originally called “Tuku Tumu,” meaning dry firewood, the name evolved as early missionaries settled in the area.

Over time, families migrated from Nyeri and the community expanded. Watch below to hear a beautiful traditional song from the children at the Tumutumu primary school to get a better taste of their culture.

With rich loam soil ideal for farming, Tumutumu has long relied on agriculture. Coffee remains a major crop, alongside maize, beans, bananas, avocados, mangos, vegetables, and dairy farming.

Today, 2,621 people across 735 households call Tumutumu home, supported by five local churches that play an active role in community life.

Nearly Ten Years of Partnership and Progress

Tumutumu partnered with 410 Bridge in 2015 with a clear vision for long-term, holistic development.

Over the years, the community worked toward ambitious goals, including:

  • Education supplies and training for children
  • Foundations for Farming
  • Leadership council training
  • Savings group expansion
  • Fruit tree projects
  • Secondary school mentorship
  • Living Seed program expansion
  • Pastoral training
  • Business start-up training
  • Completion of a water project

Each initiative was designed not as a handout, but as an investment in local capacity and leadership. Graduation signals that these systems are now locally led and sustained.

Here are some photos from over the years:

Elizabeth Wangui. Growth That Tells the Story

Elizabeth Wangui’s journey reflects the transformation happening across Tumutumu.

A wife and mother of five, Elizabeth faced significant challenges in 2024. Farming costs were high, returns were low, and the pressure of providing for her family weighed heavily on her. Despite spending large amounts on seedlings and fertilizer, her harvests struggled.

Through the Foundations for Farming training, everything changed. Elizabeth learned conservation agriculture practices such as mulching, proper spacing, timely planting, and using manure instead of expensive inputs. She applied what she learned with discipline and confidence.

The results were remarkable. Her maize and beans flourished, and her coffee harvest grew from 200 kilograms to 2,000 kilograms of coffee berries.

Elizabeth now shares this knowledge with other farmers, multiplying the impact beyond her own land. At the same time, participation in the Alpha Course strengthened her spiritually and emotionally. She describes feeling more hopeful, focused, and confident as a mother and provider. Her story is one of dignity restored and leadership emerging.

A Day of Joy. The Tumutumu Graduation Ceremony

Graduation day brought together hundreds of community members at Tumutumu Primary School for a celebration filled with gratitude and joy.

The ceremony was made even more meaningful by the presence of Cypress Baptist Church, faithful partners who have walked alongside Tumutumu for the past ten years. The day was marked by lively songs, energetic dances, and heartfelt speeches as community members reflected on how far they have come.

Again and again, gratitude to God was expressed for transformation not only in individual lives, but across the entire community. The highlight of the celebration was the symbolic cutting of a beautifully decorated cake.

Community leaders and 410 Bridge representatives shared the moment together, celebrating achievements and affirming a shared commitment to a hopeful future.

What Graduation Really Means

Graduation does not mean the story ends. It means Tumutumu is equipped, confident, and ready to move forward under local leadership.

Because of faithful donors, farmers are thriving, leaders are trained, churches are strengthened, and families are equipped to care for themselves and one another. Tumutumu’s graduation is proof that long-term investment leads to lasting change.

Thank you for being part of this journey. This milestone belongs to you too.

Why Our New Kiu Case Study Matters

Seeing real, long-term transformation is the heart of why we do community development. It’s one thing to launch programs or build infrastructure, but it’s entirely another to watch a community continue to grow and thrive on its own after we step back.

That’s why we now have a new Kiu case study — to show what sustainable, community-led development looks like when it really works.
