Segera Area Update

Below is the latest Segera Area Update. There are some really great things going on in the Segera area. Here is one of those great things: Communities working towards becoming independent 410 Bridge communities…

The community of Depatus is the first major settlement as you cross the Uaso Nyiro river and enter the Segera “area.”  It’s home to about 2,500 people.

Like Endana, The 410 Bridge’s new Community Representative will begin to establish a Leadership Council in Depatus this year.  The young-adult generation (3rd generation) of Depatus appears to have already started organizing themselves in an effort to improve their quality of life.  One of these young leaders told us, “Our grandparents founded this community.  Our parents were born here and lived like this.  We were born here and unless we start changing, we will live like they did and that’s not acceptable to our generation.”

Their plan is to secure land on which each family can settle and farm.  They presented us with a preliminary plan to purchase 10 acres of land near the river.  The community created a work plan whereby families rotate weekly in working the field.  They intend to grow a cash crop and use the proceeds to purchase more and more land, until such time as all of the families can purchase property to sustain themselves.

The 410 Bridge, along with another Segera partner church – NewSpring Church in Anderson, SC – have agreed to lend them the funds to purchase the first 10 acres.  If the community honors its commitment, we will continue to help them acquire more land until they can do so on their own.   We expect the first plot to be purchased within 90-days.

Why Our New Kiu Case Study Matters

Seeing real, long-term transformation is the heart of why we do community development. It’s one thing to launch programs or build infrastructure, but it’s entirely another to watch a community continue to grow and thrive on its own after we step back.
