From 410 Day to the Mountains of Guatemala

A Goal, A Generous Response

On 410 Day 2024, we set out with a clear purpose: to raise $41,000 for Kenya and $41,000 for Guatemala. These funds would go directly toward vital economic development programs—Foundations for Farming classes, Business Start-Up Training, the Living Seed Program, and more.

We asked you to join us in planting seeds of change, and you responded with overwhelming generosity. Not only was the goal met—it was surpassed. Together, you gave $83,435.

That one day of giving is now multiplying into months and years of impact.

Life in the Mountains of Guatemala

High in the mountains of Unión Cantinil, Guatemala, lie the villages of Las Lomas, La Nueva Independencia, and El Triunfo. Here, families have long lived on the edge of survival—sometimes with just enough, often with less.

In these communities, more than half of the population lives in poverty. One in six families cannot even afford the minimum cost of food. Jobs are scarce. Women are often left behind. And perhaps most painful of all, many people have come to believe that their situation is permanent. That they were born to survive, not to thrive.

But hopelessness is not the end of the story.

Planting Hope That Multiplies

Because of your 410 Day gifts, a pilot program was launched in these mountain villages. The approach was simple but profound: provide families not with handouts, but with living tools and the knowledge to use them well.

Each selected family received hens that lay eggs, rabbits that multiply quickly, and hands-on training to transform them into food and income.

Alongside the training came mentorship, encouragement, and a commitment to share what they had received with their neighbors.

This is the multiplication effect of hope.

The Pass-On Gift

Every family that received animals also made a promise. Within six months, they would pass on the same number of hens and rabbits to another family in need. What began with 25 households will soon reach many more, spreading neighbor to neighbor, family to family.

One hen doesn’t just feed a child for a day. It provides eggs for the weeks and months to come. A rabbit doesn’t just provide one meal—it multiplies quickly, creating an ongoing source of nourishment and income.

This “pass-on gift” means that what was given on one day—410 Day—continues to grow and expand. It is not charity, but dignity. Families are investing their own time, land, and labor. They are building something sustainable, and in doing so, they are rediscovering their own worth and capacity.

Real Change for Real Families

The goals of this program are practical and life-changing:

  • Increase household income by more than a third.
  • Ensure children have regular access to protein for better nutrition.
  • Create sustainable micro-farms in rural areas.
  • Build a network of families committed to lifting one another up.

Because of your generosity, these goals are already being realized. Parents are standing taller. Children are eating better. Neighbors are choosing to pass on what they’ve received, knowing the same kindness will multiply through their community.

More Than Hens and Rabbits

At first glance, this might look like a simple story about animals. But it is far more than that. It is about restoration. It is about families discovering that their work matters, their lives have value, and their children can dream again.

What began with $83,435 given on one special day has multiplied into hope, dignity, and transformation that will continue long after the first gift was made.

Thank You

From the bottom of our hearts—thank you. Your generosity on 410 Day planted seeds of hope in Guatemala and beyond. Those seeds are multiplying, bringing nourishment to children, income to families, and dignity to entire communities.

The story isn’t finished. What you helped begin will continue to grow, multiply, and change lives for years to come. Gracias!

Why Our New Kiu Case Study Matters

Seeing real, long-term transformation is the heart of why we do community development. It’s one thing to launch programs or build infrastructure, but it’s entirely another to watch a community continue to grow and thrive on its own after we step back.

That’s why we now have a new Kiu case study — to show what sustainable, community-led development looks like when it really works.
